Patients need relevant and meaningful information to understand the cost of care and their financial responsibilities. Hospitals across Illinois have committed to IHA’s price transparency principles.

IHA developed these principles with input from our CFO Forum to help focus and shape discussion as the healthcare industry moves toward greater transparency. 191 IHA member hospitals, or 92 percent, have pledged to adopt these principles.

  • IHA's Provider Health Plan Education Information has cost estimators and other tools for patients covered by private insurance. This document contains information for: Aetna, BlueCross BlueShield of Illinois, Cigna, Humana and UnitedHealthCare.

Average Charges for Illinois Hospitals

  • The Illinois Department of Public Health collects inpatient and outpatient charge information from hospitals. Hospital-specific average charges for more than 50 major diagnoses are available on the Hospital Report Card and Consumer Guide to Health Care website.

Checklist for Price Inquiries

  • Since the 1980s, Illinois law has required hospitals to make available to prospective patients information on the normal charge incurred for any procedure or operation the prospective patient is considering, as well as post current charges for 18 specific services.
