IHA Launches COVID-19 'Help Us Help You' Campaign

March 23, 2020

To reduce the spread of COVID-19, IHA’s “Help Us Help You” campaign urges all Illinois residents to take preventive measures to protect themselves, their families and their neighbors. Doing so will also help prevent a surge of COVID-19 patients that could inundate the state’s 200 hospitals and nearly 40 health systems.

Michael Wahl, MD, emphasized the urgency of slowing the spread of the virus. Dr. Wahl is medical director of the Illinois Poison Center (IPC) at IHA. IPC is assisting the Illinois Department of Public Health (IDPH) in running the State’s COVID-19 hotline (800-889-3931).

“If this does not happen, a large number of people will get sick in a very short time frame, which will overwhelm our healthcare system as all seek care at the same time,” Dr. Wahl said.

IHA President and CEO A.J. Wilhelmi said IHA strongly supports Gov. J.B. Pritzker’s stay-at-home order effective through April 7.

“Over the past two months, Illinois hospitals have taken extraordinary and swift action in response to the coronavirus outbreak,” Wilhelmi said. “They are prepared thanks to staunch emergency preparedness and infection control training.”

Hospitals’ preventive measures include:

  • Screening all patients and staff before entrance;
  • Enhancing sanitation protocols; and
  • Offering increased telehealth services.
