Medication safety is a priority for IHA and Illinois hospitals, as 82 percent of American adults take at least one medication. IHA is a founding member of the Illinois Medication Safety Coalition.

The Illinois Prescription Monitoring Program collects records on schedule II, III, IV and V controlled substance prescriptions from pharmacies daily and shares the information with authorized users.
With the opioid crisis harming families and communities, IHA supports efforts to limit access to painkillers, coordinate provider response and encourage recovery.
On Dec. 13, 2017, Governor Bruce Rauner signed legislation (SB772/Public Act 100-0564) that outlines new Prescription monitoring requirements for hospitals and prescribers of controlled substances.
Legislation effective Jan. 1, 2018, requires all electronic health record systems to interface with the Illinois Prescription Monitoring Program. The deadline for integration is Jan. 1, 2021.
